Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is one of the newer “skin rejuvenating” techniques employed to help improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion.
At St Mellion clinic methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of aluminum oxide crystals. Particles are removed off through the wand/handpiece through which the abrasive particles come.
Microdermabrasion is one of the category of treatments such as botulinum toxin (Botox®), dermal fillers and superficial chemical peels where the treatment session is short, with few side effects and virtually no time off work. They also do not require any surgery.
Microdermabrasion was discovered in the U.S.A. and, in 2006, just under 1 million treatments were performed in America. These statistics come from the American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and they make microdermabrasion the fourth most popular cosmetic procedure in that country.

Are You a Candidate For Microdermabrasion?
Good candidates for microdermabrasion are individuals with acne prone or blotchy skin, and those with small scars, fine lines, keratoses, large pores or white spots. If you have sun damage or uneven texture and would like to improve the condition of your skin, you are also a candidate for microdermabrasion.
What to Expect During a Treatment
The treatments typically last 20 to 30 minutes for the face. If your treatment includes the neck and upper chest area, it may last up to an hour.
A normal course of microdermabrasion treatments varies between 4 to 8 at approximately 2 week intervals.
Most patients actually feel and see a difference just after one or two treatments but schedule additional treatments to increase this improvement.
